A blog about chapters 3/9/10 by Nathan Alvarez Chapter 3 is all about communication and how different cultures should communicate with each other for example in order to avoid situations that might be considered rude to the other culture. Chapter 3 defines culture as "a system of shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and norms that guides what is considered appropriate among an identifiable group of people" (Samovar, Porter, & McDaniel, 2012). Chapter 3 explains how behind every culture in the heart of it are its values. The values of a culture are basically what determines right from wrong, good from bad, fair from unfair, and etc. Cultures have 2 sets of values one is ideal values and the other is real values. Ideal values are values people claim to follow for example the laws in the united states don't let you J-walk but most people do it anyways and don't feel wrong about it. Real values are the values that guide actual behavior. Chapter 9 focuses on groups an...

Chapters 3, 9, and 10 Blog Chapter 3: Intercultural Communication. Intercultural communication is when people of different cultural backgrounds communicate with one another verbally or nonverbally. Group 1 was given this topic and did an amazing job at explaining the different examples of intercultural communication and the overall explanation of what Intercultural communication is. Chapter 9: Communicating in Groups. This chapter spoke on the effectiveness of communicating in groups and how to do so efficiently. The name of the chapter was somewhat self-explanatory but nonetheless left a lot to be explained which is what group 2 did significantly well. Group 2 presented on this topic and did a swell job on talking about how to communicate in groups and its effectiveness. My group's assigned topic was Chapter 10 Group Leadership and Problem Solving. In this topic we discussed the different types of leaders, task roles, and maintenance roles. We also went over procedura...

Peter Hernandez This past week my speech class presented three different chapters in groups. I was very fortunate to be a part of group three where we not only worked on chapter 10, but also used many of the methods from the chapter. Every single person in my group was a key factor in the presentation. We all had our part into the presentation and implemented the new information we learned from our chapter and our creativity. Due to the pandemic we're currently going through, our presentation was a bit different from the usual speech presentation. For our presentation we used Remote Access Report ( RAR) to input the information we learned to be able to teach it to the class while being in our own homes. We used sites like google slides to all work on ...

Learning about how to work with group members and learning how to work with one another efficiently is really refreshing. Seeing and experiencing new ways to better not only the group but ourselves is always an important thing to learn. Because of the pandemic, it’s obviously much harder having to communicate with our group members, but thankfully we were able to work through any issues we were having and were able to get our project done. I know that as student, no matter what age, we are taught how to work with our classmates, and group members, and reading the importance of it in chapter 10 shows how serious something like this should be taken, since working, or with others is inevitable in the workforce, and in life in general. Learning more in detail, and having this explained in fine print rather than being told to “work together” I find to be much easier to understand, and again, feel it to be more concrete and crucial, especially during these times where we can’t see each...

Chapter 10 Presentation by Viena Zamora I had a presentation on chapter 10 with my group my assigned subject was "Analyze the Problem" and "Determine Criteria for Judging Solutions". These two subjects were focused on the steps the problem analysis and judging solution. The subject first, I was talking about how to analyze the problem. This process with each member shares their knowledge of the problem. Then, the group determines additional questions that need to be answered and investigated. Also, some members may be assigned to conduct library or online research about the problem, others may interview experts, and you can carry out surveys to gather enough information. However, group members should help the group answer the key questions about the problem. I continue with my presentation about the second subject "Determine criteria for Judging Solutions". I began with What is criteria? Criteria are the ideals or requirements on which a judgment, eva...

In chapter 10 we talked mainly about how to be leaders and how to be clear referents in a meeting. A leader can be created in different ways; from knowing how to control the flow of the meeting from the beginning to the end. In particular, I had to talk about guidelines for meeting leaders, for me it was a very curious topic to talk about. To be a good leader and be able to lead a meeting there are certain points that should be followed within one; The before, during, and after a meeting are just as important as when one develops qualities to be a leader. Being able to follow a well-organized meeting sets you apart from other people when it comes to being a leader. As we discussed the day of the presentation, the before a meeting is as important as the during or after the meeting. The different topics that must be carried are not so complicated and they are truly manageable, a leader must be able to know how to handle what happens in the meeting, as well as control the time...
