Chapters 3, 9, and 10 Blog
Chapter 3: Intercultural Communication. Intercultural communication is when people of different cultural backgrounds communicate with one another verbally or nonverbally. Group 1 was given this topic and did an amazing job at explaining the different examples of intercultural communication and the overall explanation of what Intercultural communication is.
Chapter 9: Communicating in Groups. This chapter spoke on the effectiveness of communicating in groups and how to do so efficiently. The name of the chapter was somewhat self-explanatory but nonetheless left a lot to be explained which is what group 2 did significantly well. Group 2 presented on this topic and did a swell job on talking about how to communicate in groups and its effectiveness.
My group's assigned topic was Chapter 10 Group Leadership and Problem Solving. In this topic we discussed the different types of leaders, task roles, and maintenance roles. We also
went over procedural roles and overall responsibilities members of groups should follow. To go more in-depth the chapter basically gives advice for groups on how to work together and help one another. It first discusses Leadership. The role of the leader is to help accommodate everyone’s common goal in the group. For example, my group has a leader and so do the other two groups, their job is to help everyone figure out what we each would like to accomplish in the group. Just like the leaders have a job so do the rest of the members of the group do. We, the members, of the group are in charge of completing certain task roles and maintenance roles. This involves helping each other out with an issue, speaking to one another when there is a possible disagreement, and encouraging each other to speak during presentations.
I noticed at the end of the week when we had all finished our presentations that we all used what we learned in each of our respective chapters and in everyone elses chapters. We all used intercultural communication considering we all come from different parts of life and all have very different or even very similar cultures and verbally each communicated with one another. We all also used chapter nine’s communicating in groups. Before this class myself and my group members did not know one another as well as everyone else in the class. But we all came together and communicated in our own time to make sure we all did what we had to do in order to get our work done. Finally we all also used Group Leadership and problem solving. Each group had a leader with certain responsibilities they had to accomplish, just like the members of the group had certain tasks they were responsible for as well. This was my first presentation that I have had to do in college and was very nerve wracking. Professor Sinkoff has been wonderful in assisting everyone with our presentations and in answering any questions that we may have. My group has been awesome in assisting each other and communicating with each other, I am ready to see what other school adventures we will be experiencing together!
